Sesame Workshop is a non-profit organization that makes educational shows and other learning tools. Along with Nickelodeon, it was one of the two companies that co-founded and launched the Noggin channel.

Sesame Workshop produced some original shows for the channel, including Sponk!, Play With Me Sesame, Out There, and The Upside Down Show. Sesame also aired a wide variety of shows from its archive library on Noggin.

Noggin history[]

In 1995, Sesame Workshop (then called the Children's Television Workshop, or CTW) made plans for an independent cable network to air its shows. The original name for this channel was "New Kid City." Sesame abandoned the idea later on. During this time, Nickelodeon was planning a similar network to air its educational programming to be titled "Big Orange." Instead of discarding the concept, Nickelodeon continued to expand upon the idea by adapting the project to meet new requirements for educational programs. In 1998, Nick and Sesame formed a partnership and planned a joint venture between the two called Noggin (named after a slang word for the head, reflecting the channel's educational goals).

Noggin launched on February 2, 1999. It was intended to fill a gap in educational shows aimed at older children. In the channel's early years, most of its reruns came from Sesame Workshop's library of older shows. Noggin's variety shows, The Phred on Your Head Show and URL with Phred, featured Sesame Workshop's series Cro as well as some Sesame Street skits.
